The Small Glossary About Law And Paralegal Technology

This is a small glossary of 15 words to help people to know more about my program. Law is abstract, so I tried to illustrate the best way I can. This is what we learn in general, in an easy way for the viewers of this blog.

Doctrine
noun
Set of legal works intended to explain or interpret the law.
Example: If you want to do proper research, you should look the doctrine.

Case law
noun
The law as established by the outcome of former cases.
Example: The lawyer is showing to the judge an old case law to refer to his situation.
fr: Jurisprudence
Themis
noun
In Greek religion, personification of justice, goddess of wisdom and good counsel, and the interpreter of the gods' will.
Example: Themis is the emblem of justice.

Legal proceeding
noun
The ordinary process of a lawsuit or criminal prosecution, from the first filing to the final decision.
Example: The legal proceeding took a lot of time.
fr: Procès/ poursuite judiciaire
Gown
noun
A distinctive robe worn by a professional or academic person.
Example: A lawyer needs to wear a gown.
fr: Toge
Law firm
noun
A business that is engaged in the practice of law.
Example: She is a lawyer in a Montreal law firm.
fr: Cabinet
Bailiff
noun
An official in a court of law who keeps order, looks after prisoners, etc.
Example: The bailiff will take your house if you don't pay your dept.

Court house
noun
A court house is a building that is home to a local court of law and often the regional county government as well, although this is not the case in some larger cities.
Example: I am going to the court house.

Stenographer
noun
A person whose job is to transcribe speech in shorthand.
Example: A court stenographer is taking notes in an effective way.

Security
noun
A thing deposited or pledged as a guarantee of the fulfillment of an undertaking or the repayment of a loan, to be forfeited in case of default.
Example: Your car have a security.

Legislator
noun
A person who writes and passes laws, especially someone who is a member of a legislature.
Example: The role of a judge is to determine what does the legislator wanted to say.
fr: Législateur
Legality
noun
The quality or state of being in accordance with the law.
Example: Documentation testifying to the legality of the arms sale.
fr: Légalité
Enjoyment
noun
The action of possessing and benefiting from something.
Example: This prejudice caused the loss of enjoyment for his life.
fr: Jouissance
Veto
noun
Power of opposition of an authority to a passed law, to an adopted resolution.
Example: The governor general has the power of veto, that means that she can reject any law.
fr: Véto
Usufruct
noun
The right to enjoy the use and advantages of another's property short of the destruction or waste of its substance.
Example: In usufruct, a person or group has the right to use the property of another.
fr: Usufruit
